George and Rhonda Andreadis Collection of Lancaster City Records, Series 6 Relief Fund
Description
The documents in MG0545, Series 6 pertain to a city fund set up by the Hon. James Buchanan in 1853 [or 1849] with the purchase and donation of a $4,000 bond, the interest of which was used to buy heating fuel and other items for needy women (mostly widows) throughout the city. As other philanthropists contributed money, the Fund had additional names added to it, such as the Buchanan-McEvoy Fund and the Buchanan-McEvoy-Reynolds Fund. The documents in this series include invoices and receipts for some of the financial transactions completed by the relief fund such as the purchasing of coal, advertizing the fund and soliciting for coal donations in local newspapers, as well as the printing of Relief Fund "tickets."

Letter from Charles M. Howell to Mrs. Henry E. Johnston explaining that the weight of James Buchanan’s tomb will be carried by an interior brick arch; asserting that the plan differs only slightly from the wishes of Mr. Buchanan, unlike the draft which he received from Mr. Johnston which is very pretty; and that H. B. Swarr and E. Y. Buchanan have approved the plan. Lancaster.

Printed version of the will of James Buchanan directing that his body be interred in the Woodward Hill Cemetery; that all debts (“which are small”) be paid out of the estate; that the furnishings of the house be divided among Harriet L. Johnston, Edward Y. Buchanan and J. Buchanan Henry, with the provision that Esther Parker be given $200 worth of the articles; bequeaths his wearing apparel, gold watch, watch chain and seals to Edward Y. Buchanan; bequeaths $5000 to Esther Parker; bequeaths his two certificates of loan, Nos. 43 and 43 or the sum of $2,000 if the certificates have been disposed of “for the use of poor and indigent females of the city” to be added to the $4,000 already provided; bequeaths $1,000 to the Presbyterian church in Lancaster of which he is a member; directs that all the real estate he owns be sold; directs that the proceeds from the sale of real estate, rents, etc., be distributed as described to his relatives: Harriet Lane Johnston, Edward Y. Buchanan, J. Buchanan Henry, John B. Lane, James B. Lane, Elliott E. Lane; Mary E. Dunham, Maria B. Weaver, Jessie Magaw, James B. Weaver, John Bliss Weaver and Maria Magaw. Codicils bequeath sums of money to Martha J. Lane, William B. Reed (to write his biography), his wife, Mary L. Reed; domestics Peter Hillyer, Mary Smithgall, Lizzie Stoner; and finally, bequeaths the dwelling at Wheatland and all its land of 22 acres to Harriet Lane Johnston. Lancaster. Description
Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston hoping she is having as much fun in Havana “as a good Episcopalian should”; noting that Kitty and Ellen are sick; stating that Annie and Harriet have left on “good footing”; having not seen any of the Nevins except Wilberforce; stating that the only daughter of Ohio Senator Allen dropped by with her husband, Dr. Scott; noting that good servants are hard to find and keep, but he likes Lizzie and hopes she will stay; commenting that Mrs. Norris could find no house in Lancaster she liked and has returned to Philadelphia (though he could have sold her the Lane house for $15,000 or $16,000); having called on Mrs. Jenkins where he met the President of the Patriot Daughters, adding that Mrs. Jenkins was sorry not to have attended Harriet’s wedding, but said little about Mrs. Lane, but that Mrs. Jenkins might have come if she had known that Harriet [Old] and Jane Slaymaker were there; enclosing a note (which came to him open) from Mrs. E. A letter from J. Ridenour, Jr. to James Buchanan. Ridenour explains how glad he was to hear Buchanan’s opinions on the war while he was visiting him at Wheatland. After leaving Wheatland, Ridenour spoke with Mr. Hamilton in Lancaster, who told him about Buchanan’s differing views on the war and the Confederacy. J. Ridenour, Jr. asks James Buchanan to confirm his notes on their conversation at Wheatland, that Buchanan did not agree with the Confederacy and would never have signed a compromise had he been President during the war, and that Mr. Hamilton was wrong. Harrisburg. With envelope and transcription. 1 October 1862.
