The George Steinman Papers, Series 1 contains an album, compiled by George Steinman, with many photographs of buildings, tombstones, monuments and scenes of Lancaster city and county. Ephemera and newspaper articles are among the photographs. Represented in the album are Postlethwaite's Tavern, hotels and taverns, fire houses, the Conestoga massacre, churches, cemeteries, Ephrata Cloister, prominent citizens and their homes, Stehli Silk Mill, and schools. The four boxes contain orginal correspondence, documents, photographs and ephemera or and pertaining to the same subject matter as the album.

This scrapbook discusses many aspects about the Lancaster County Amish community. Several well-known Amish customs are mentioned throughout the newspaper clippings such as Rumspringa, barn raising, marriage season, and education. Other articles contain information about funeral customs, past-time activities, agriculture and other occupations. An article of special interest surrounds two Amish men arrested for religious beliefs.

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Scrapbook appears to be the work of Thomas' son, Blanton Welsh. The volume was origianlly a record book for the Commonwealth Insurance Company, for which Thomas Welsh was an agent in Columbia. The scrapbook contains newspaper articles from the Columbia Spy, beginning with articles on the cholera epidemic of 1854, Welsh's cases as Justice of the Peace, and published war correspondence by Thomas Welsh under the names "Thirsty Squad" and "45". Blanton continued the scrapbook with newspaper articles about his father and sisters, and a lawsuit against him in 1930; his mother's obituary; his wedding announcement; his visiting cards; a letter from Lillie to Blanton; and letters to Thomas Welsh. Scrapbook of Grace Anna Brosius Biddle, 1911-1926. This scrapbook chronicles the social life of Grace and the political, service, and religious life of her husband, Clement M. Biddle. The volume contains newspaper and magazine clippings, church bulletins, event programs, photographs, and correspondence. The newspaper clippings, from French and American publications, pertain to YMCA/YWCA campaigns, World War I volunteer and post-war relief efforts, travel overseas, and local and national events. The ephemera includes announcements of Swarthmore College alumni events in Mount Vernon, New York.

Corporate Lancaster encompasses a large variety of businesses throughout the county. Many of these businesses are power companies including electric, water and coal. Some of the major companies mentioned include Atglen Water Company, Susquehanna Canal Water and Power Company, Pennsylvania Water and Power Company, Lititz Water Works, Edison Electric Illuminating Company, and Holtwood Coal Company. These comprise the majority of the scrapbook, however, many retail, savings and insurance companies are also mentioned. Recognizable names are F. W. Woolworth and Company, City Savings and Trust, Lancaster Home Mutual Fire Insurance Company, Steinman Hardware Store, and the Hager Store. Information about taxes, population, censuses and stocks are featured in some of the newspaper clippings. Many modes of transportation were written about, such as trolley lines, railroads and canals. The materials available in this book include an account book, newspaper clippings, photographs, advertisements, and postcards.

Letter with biographical information about Miles Rock
Description
This letter from Capt. W. S. Crosley, Hydrographer, U.S. Navy, to Rep. Griest is a response to a letter from Griest to the Director, Geological Survey, Department of the Interior, in which he requested information about astronomer Miles Rock for Pierce Lesher in Lancaster. Crosley's letter provides biographical information about Mr. Rock.
Admin/Biographical History
Miles Rock (1840-1901) was "the son of Peter and Mary Graver Rock and stepson of Samuel Reemsnyder. In 1860 he was a student at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in West Chester, Chester County, June 4, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Camp Carroll, Baltimore, Maryland, July 26 as a private with Co. B, 1st Pennsylvania Reserves (30th Pennsylvania). On August 14, 1863, he transferred to the regular army with the U.S. Signal Corps, and honorably discharged on a date yet to be found, although typically the transferees int the U.S. Signal Corps left service ca. August 1865.
After the war, he graduated from Lehigh University with a degree in civil engineering and then taught mathematics and mineralogy. He married Susan Clarkson May 26, 1870, in Philadelphia and fathered Amy Cordoba (b. 04/25/1872 - married Frederick Leslie Ransome) and Alfred Mayer (b. 09/26/1877). He worked as an astronomer at the U.S. Naval Observatory and later became astronomical engineer for Guatemala, South America, making his home there. He died allegedly from "acute enterogastritis" following a heart attack. Source: Dennis Brandt.

Description
These scrapbooks commemorate the centennial celebration of the founding of The Church of Our Father, a Unitarian church located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. They illustrate the beliefs within the religion and the stance on evolution and science. The volumes contain newspaper clippings, church bulletins, event invitations, and congregation letters, both typed and handwritten. The church was involved in community efforts as well education, lectures and clubs. Some of the Unitarian organizations are also mentioned such as the American Unitarian Association, National League of Unitarian Laymen, Unitarian Laymen's League, and Men's Liberal Club. Prominent people within the church and religion that were mentioned were John B. Day, Rush and Zoë Shippen, Samuel Elliot, and Earl C. Davis. Others mentioned throughout the books were Milton T. Garvin, Nicholas Jozan, Arthur Coxon, Robert Sheridan Miller, Woodrow Wilson, Joseph Priestley, Henry Shippen, Edward Howard Griggs, Earnest Adams, Edward Reeman, Charles Riedel, Charles Henry Tucker, and Earl C. Davis. Some of the articles give historical context with subjects such as woman's suffrage and Woodrow Wilson.
Note: Loose newspaper articles have been photocopied. Both the photocopies and loose ephemera have been removed from the books and placed into separate folders to prevent further damage to the items.

Catharine B. Spitler Scrapbook, Book 2, 24 December 1971- 15 April 1987
Description
Catharine B. Spitler, a resident of Landisville, Pennsylvania, compiled these scrapbooks. Book one contains information primarily about World War II. The newspaper clippings include information about Lancaster natives, both men and women that were involved in World War II, including ranks and location of service. There are also articles about the United States involvement in World War II. Interesting local articles and programs discuss the World War II Memorial in West Hempfield Township. Columbia's Sesquicentennial was documented through a series of newspaper clippings located in this scrapbook.
Book two is a compilation of newspaper clippings, engagement announcements, wedding announcements and obituaries pertaining to Lancastrians. Locations around Lancaster County that were mentioned are as follows: Lancaster, Hempfield, Ephrata, Maytown and Mount Joy. An interesting subject within the second scrapbook is the1972 Flood of Lancaster (Hurricane Agnes).
