Title: Municipal Liens

Description: Documents filed with the Court of Common Pleas by municipalities in Lancaster County placing liens on real estate. The overwhelming majority were filed by the City of Lancaster. The next greatest number were filed by the Borough of Columbia. Other liens were filed by the boroughs of Adamstown, Ephrata, New Holland, Quarryville, Strasburg, and Washington. The liens show docket book and page numbers, the name of property owner, and then describe the location and size of the property along with buildings and improvements, the amount of money in question, and the cause for the assessment. These documents were recorded in Municipal Lien Docket Books 2 through 5, and are arranged in the order they appear therein. This leads to an oddity in filing order, in that the last 45 liens in Book 4 fall out of chronological sequence, overlapping and extending slightly beyond the dates of the liens in Book 5. Handwritten, plus a very few typewritten.

Title: A Brief Autobiography of Brigadier General Thomas Welsh

Description: Handwritten autobiography of Brigadier General Thomas Welsh. Mentions his birth in May 1824 and his military career beginning with his enlistment during the Mexican War through October 1861. Although undated, this was clearly written after November 29, 1862 when he was brevetted to Brigadier (more likely it was written shortly before or after he was commissioned in March 1863). Written in the third person. One page. Note: This is the third biography included in this collection, see also MG0828_SeriesA_F01 It01 and MG0828_SeriesD-62_F06.

Admin/Biographical History: Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Title: Temperance Collection

Description: The Temperance Collection includes convention programs of the Lancaster County Woman's Christian Temperance Union (W.C.T.U.); a history of the group from 1884-1959; Pennsylvania State W.C.T.U. function programs; and a minute book from the Bart Chapter. Included are handwritten notes on some of the conventions, pro-temperance booklets and newspapers (Moral Reformer and American Reformer), and miscellaneous addresses and articles. Of special interest is a booklet "Operation Interview" in which 36 prominent Lancastrians comment on the question, "Is social drinking necessary for success?", and a newspaper article reminiscing on the temperance movement in Columbia, Pennsylvania.

Title: Columbia Bridge Company Collection

Description: The Columbia Bridge Company Collection is a valuable source of information concerning construction of bridges in the early 1800s. Documents concern the building of the first two bridges across the Susquehanna River in 1814 and 1832. Items in the collection include minutes, form for stock certificate, invoices, legal papers, proposals, receipts, stockholders, promissory notes, by-laws, settlement of stage tolls with Samuel Slaymaker 1813, salary receipts, circulars and announcements, bridge tolls, orders for payment, correspondence, and a stock certificate from 1842

Admin/Biographical History: First Bridge; Construction of the first Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge was begun in 1812 and completed December 5, 1814, by J. Wolcott, H. Slaymaker, S. Slaymaker at a total cost of $231,771, which was underwritten by the newly formed Columbia Bank and Bridge Company. The bridge was 5,690 feet (1,730 m) long and 30 feet (9.1 m) wide and had 54 piers and twin carriageways. Constructed of wood and stone, the covered bridge also included a wooden roof, a whitewashed interior and openings in its wooden sides to view the river and surrounding areas. It was considered the longest covered bridge in the world at the time. The bridge accommodated east-west traffic across the Susquehanna River for 14 years before being destroyed by ice, high water and severe weather on February 5, 1832.; Second bridge; Construction of the second Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge, also covered, started mid-1832 and was completed in 1834 (opening on July 8, 1834) by James Moore and John Evans at a cost of $157,300. It was 5,620 feet (1,710 m) long and 28 feet (8.5 m) wide and also enjoyed the distinction of being the world's longest covered bridge. The wood and stone structure had 27 piers, a carriageway, walkway, and two towpaths to guide canal traffic across the river. Much of the mostly oak timber used in its construction was salvaged from the previous bridge. Its roof was covered with shingles, its sides with weatherboard, and its interior was whitewashed. The structure was modified in 1840 by the Canal Company at a cost of $40,000 concurrent with the construction of the Wrightsville Dam. Towpaths of different levels and with sidewalls were added to prevent horses from falling into river, as happened several times when the river flooded. The roof of the lower path formed the floor of upper path. In this way, canal boats were towed across the river from the Pennsylvania Canal on the Columbia side to the Susquehanna and Tidewater Canal at Wrightsville. Sometime after 1846, a double-track railway was added, linking the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad to the Northern Central Railway. Title: Letter from Annie Welsh to Thomas Welsh describing the chaos surrounding the burning of the Wrightsville-Columbia bridge

Description: Handwritten letter to Thomas Welsh from his wife, Annie in Columbia, Lancaster County. Letter describes the approach of the Confederate army to Columbia; the fleeing of citizens from York County acrosss the bridge; the reactions of various people in Columbia; her determination to stay in Columbia; and the terrible site of seeing the river bridge on fire. See MG0828 SeriesE F04 for related envelope. Note: General Welsh was at Vicksburg at the time, commanding the 1st Division of the 9th Corps in support of General Grant.

Admin/Biographical History: Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Description: The Advertising and Promotional Collection contains materials for a wide variety of businesses and organizations in Lancaster County, including manufacturers, department and clothing stores, entertainment venues, grocery stores, restaurants, service providers, and social clubs. Of special interest is the use of both English and German in a brochure from the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co., as well as in the soap-making directions from the Pennsylvania Salt Co. There are also a 1921 program from Lancaster's Colonial Theatre and boxing programs that list Lancaster native, Leo Houck.

Title: History of Colonel Thomas Welsh

Description: Handwritten autobiography of Thomas Welsh, written in third person. Text sketches his military career through the Battle of South Mountain. This is an unfinished draft, with portions crossed out. Initially written in July 1862 while he was at Hilton Head, South Carolina then the section about Acquia Creek, Virginia and South Mountain, Maryland were added in pencil after the Battle of South Mountain, September 14, 1862.

Admin/Biographical History: Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men.
