Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston reporting that Mr. and Mrs. Shunk are “agreeable companions,” that he has heard nothing from her sister, and Mr. and Mrs. Franklin and daughters paid an agreeable visit; requesting the return of the pictures of Mrs. Ellis because he likes her and her likenesses; saying that the Misses Pleasontons will winter in Bethlehem, and that Blanche Nevin is ill; asserting that The Intellingencer will suffer without Mr. Cooper; wondering if the reported renewed friendship of Forney and Magraw will last; and offering sympathy with her fast approaching motherhood. The small article relates to money donated by James Buchanan to the First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster, as well as authorities of the city of Lancaster, to be used to buy fuel for poor women of the city during the winter months. No date. Accompanied by a letter from the donor. Mr. George M. Steidler is credited with preserving the article.

Description
Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston hoping she is having as much fun in Havana “as a good Episcopalian should”; noting that Kitty and Ellen are sick; stating that Annie and Harriet have left on “good footing”; having not seen any of the Nevins except Wilberforce; stating that the only daughter of Ohio Senator Allen dropped by with her husband, Dr. Scott; noting that good servants are hard to find and keep, but he likes Lizzie and hopes she will stay; commenting that Mrs. Norris could find no house in Lancaster she liked and has returned to Philadelphia (though he could have sold her the Lane house for $15,000 or $16,000); having called on Mrs. Jenkins where he met the President of the Patriot Daughters, adding that Mrs. Jenkins was sorry not to have attended Harriet’s wedding, but said little about Mrs. Lane, but that Mrs. Jenkins might have come if she had known that Harriet [Old] and Jane Slaymaker were there; enclosing a note (which came to him open) from Mrs. E. F. Etter, “who is a lady known to Miss Ann W. Stephens” and that at present he is “sequestered” with her. Embossed envelope addressed to Miss Harriet Lane. Envelope with seal addressed in care of Duratty, Plasson & Co, Havana, Cuba. Wheatland.

Printed version of the will of James Buchanan directing that his body be interred in the Woodward Hill Cemetery; that all debts (“which are small”) be paid out of the estate; that the furnishings of the house be divided among Harriet L. Johnston, Edward Y. Buchanan and J. Buchanan Henry, with the provision that Esther Parker be given $200 worth of the articles; bequeaths his wearing apparel, gold watch, watch chain and seals to Edward Y. Buchanan; bequeaths $5000 to Esther Parker; bequeaths his two certificates of loan, Nos. 43 and 43 or the sum of $2,000 if the certificates have been disposed of “for the use of poor and indigent females of the city” to be added to the $4,000 already provided; bequeaths $1,000 to the Presbyterian church in Lancaster of which he is a member; directs that all the real estate he owns be sold; directs that the proceeds from the sale of real estate, rents, etc., be distributed as described to his relatives: Harriet Lane Johnston, Edward Y. Buchanan, J. Buchanan Henry, John B. Lane, James B. Lane, Elliott E. Lane; Mary E. Dunham, Maria B. Weaver, Jessie Magaw, James B. Weaver, John Bliss Weaver and Maria Magaw. Codicils bequeath sums of money to Martha J. Lane, William B. Reed (to write his biography), his wife, Mary L. Reed; domestics Peter Hillyer, Mary Smithgall, Lizzie Stoner; and finally, bequeaths the dwelling at Wheatland and all its land of 22 acres to Harriet Lane Johnston. Lancaster. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing happiness that she can take “little Buck” for a ride but unhappy that he could not serve as godfather and gives reasons for not being a sponsor; offering advice on child raising; reporting that “Bob” and Cecil are home for the holidays; admonished the staff of The Intelligencer to send her only one copy, not three, mentioning the “war” between the Democratic and the Republican papers; noting that recent guests included Miss Snyder, Rebekah, Jane, but Mrs. Nevin scalded her foot, Pattee sprained an ankle, and Blanche is bright as ever; and asking, although he doesn’t smoke much, for Mr. Johnston to send him a box of cigars.
