Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson expressing gratitude for a five-day interlude in his less than happy position as personal secretary to the President and is “disconsolate” after Mr. Scharff’s leaving on the Harriet Lane; provides intimate details of a conversations with Mr. Scharff about their opening a law office together in New York after his upcoming marriage and that all four will be happy together living in adjoining houses in a pleasant little town near Manhattan; renders an account of his entire life including the death of his parents, his college experiences, his passing the bar in Philadelphia and setting up a thriving office there before being called by the President to be his personal secretary, a post he hopes to vacate as soon as possible to return to law practice; and his relative freedom while James Buchanan and Harriet Lane go to Bedford for a retreat, leaving him free to visit Mary on the weekends. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson trying to get over a “large dinner”; looking forward to next week when he hopes to bring his yacht to Annapolis for a sail to Baltimore and back if he gets the weekend off and the weather is fine; the President granted a short reprieve to Barret, who should have been hanged today; wonders of Miss Emily’s sore throat is better; hopes she will be able to accompany Miss Ella to Washington so that he and she can see each other every night and would be her first visit to the capital since their engagement; Mr. Magraw came from Baltimore to have dinner with him and hopes Magraw and a ”sparkling young widow” will soon make a match; has received an invitation to General Henderson’s daughter’s wedding, the groom, Mr. du Pont, is a good friend of his.

Lane (Harriet Lane’s brother) in Lancaster where all are kind, but he doesn’t like Lancaster and longs to be in New York; has plans to see both her mother and her soon; needs to be in New York on March 4 to be admitted to the bar. Henry to Louisa Anderson describing his departure from Staten Island to the Battery of Manhattan to board a ship to Bermuda; describes in detail the rough voyage through the Gulf Stream; describes his first view of the island and then a lengthy description of the horticulture and other aspects of the island; among his acquaintances along the way were Frank, who saw him off; a German gentleman who almost missed the boat; Mr. Murphy; the Outerbridges; Mr. O and his uncle Harvey, Ellie, Miss Lollie O., Mrs. Butterfield, Mrs. Bullafus and Miss Lotte and Mrs. Beille; and Aunt Sidney. Henry to Louisa Anderson lamenting his boredom, with the only excitement being the arrival of a steamer; his longing for a letter from her, even though the boat with the letter had trouble docking; replies to news from her letter including news of Dody, little Esther’s passing, her father Will Buchanan’s and Bib Christy’s grief; wants her to handle some financial affairs; wanted to go to other islands but the weather is too hot; made the acquaintance of Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Smith of Watertown; hopes Mr. Gray is called to the church; Lollie Outerbridge reports that Mr. Cartwright is interim Pastor; mentions Mr. and Mrs. Butterfield and Terrie Roosevelt, the Murphys, Mr. Perrsett, Mr. Ball, Mr. Wilson, and Mr. Magruder; the climate is warm and damp with little variation in temperature and many cloudy days; describes the island with its many plants, the results of a series of soundings showing that Bermuda is a coral island; is enamored by the variation of colors in the sea and of the scenery in general; hasn’t bathed in the harbor because of his rheumatism; sends greetings to her father, Aunt Sidney, Willie, Frank, his son, Miss Outerbridge; hopes to be home very soon.
