Baker cannot go because his wife is ill, and Thomas will be leaving on Tuesday for “the Springs”; looking forward to her visit to Wheatland when he gets back; wondering about Mrs. Ellis’ conduct; and the “young ones” have left for Oxford accompanied by Robert Nevin, with whom Harriet and he “have a good understanding.” Wheatland.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston reporting that Mr. and Mrs. Shunk are “agreeable companions,” that he has heard nothing from her sister, and Mr. and Mrs. Franklin and daughters paid an agreeable visit; requesting the return of the pictures of Mrs. Ellis because he likes her and her likenesses; saying that the Misses Pleasontons will winter in Bethlehem, and that Blanche Nevin is ill; asserting that The Intellingencer will suffer without Mr. Cooper; wondering if the reported renewed friendship of Forney and Magraw will last; and offering sympathy with her fast approaching motherhood. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing happiness that she can take “little Buck” for a ride but unhappy that he could not serve as godfather and gives reasons for not being a sponsor; offering advice on child raising; reporting that “Bob” and Cecil are home for the holidays; admonished the staff of The Intelligencer to send her only one copy, not three, mentioning the “war” between the Democratic and the Republican papers; noting that recent guests included Miss Snyder, Rebekah, Jane, but Mrs. Nevin scalded her foot, Pattee sprained an ankle, and Blanche is bright as ever; and asking, although he doesn’t smoke much, for Mr. Johnston to send him a box of cigars. Wheatland.

Agreement between Elliott T. Lane and James Buchanan concerning funds of Jane B. Lane, Elliott’s wife and James’ sister, and in case she makes no will, how the estate will be divided. Involves bequeaths from her father, James Buchanan, and her mother, Elizabeth Buchanan. Also mentioned in the agreement are her sister, Harriett Henry, and her brother, the Reverend Edward Y. Buchanan, and her four children, James B. Lane, Elliott E. Lane, Mary Elisabeth Lane and Harriett Rebecca Lane. Franklin County, PA.
