Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston regretting that the weather and his age prevents him from visiting her; expressing shock at the death of Robert Magraw; expressing his joy that Judge Black and wife, Judge Fisher and wife, and Horatio King have visited on the judges’ way to Wilkes-Barre where the state supreme court will hear an important railroad case; expressing happiness the young ones” and Miss Hetty are friends; expressing joy that Thomas, after a “rampage” of eight days has returned but would be happier if he had only the services of Rosana, his wife; expressing disappointment that Mrs. Lane nor her sons have visited; expressing joy that Blanche Nevin has recovered from her illness; and saying he is very glad that he and James Henry have settled their affair, though he thinks that their friend Mr. Schell could have been more help to James in his business; and expressing elation that James has done quite well except for his “Quick Silver speculation.” With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson apologizing for not writing on schedule but while they are in the country the regular schedule will not work since the President leaves the While House on Friday for the weekend; he is arranging a Party for a sail on the Harriet Lane that he will have no time to write; he hopes the trip will include Annapolis so that he might bring is best friend Mr. Scharff, who has kept him from becoming too wild, to meet her and implores her to like him; General Ward is joining the group in hopes that Miss Saunders will also be there, but she will not be; mentions her cousin Margie, the Ingrahams, and her aunt; chatted with Miss Emily.
