Transcription of letter from Thomas Welsh to his wife, Annie. Location is "In Camp 8 miles West of Frederick." Letter written in the early morning, the day of the battle of South Mountain. Text details conditions in the chase of the Rebels through Frederick, Maryland and his feeling "that a great Battle will be fought between here and Hagerstown within a few days — perhaps today." Notes General Burnside's compliment of the 45th Regiment and tells Annie to "take the children and go to Lebanon" if Confederate forces should approach Columbia.

Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to one of his daughters. From Waterford, Virginia. Letter expresses his pleasure at learning that Lillie has recovered from her illness, his disappointment at not being able to visit home, and provides some details of life in the camp. Text includes a description of the location of the town of Waterford, noting that the inhabitants are Quaker and friendly. Welsh expresses his disappointment in not hearing more from his family, but writes of missing his family very much.

Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to his daughter, Lillie. From Camp Opposite, Fredericksburg, Virginia. Letter describes the sadness he feels from being away from his family and expresses the hope that the war will soon be over. He mentions that he has heard about the death of Edward Shreiner, provides some information about promotions and transfers, and expresses some dismay over not receiving letters from Blanton, Effie, and Lillie.

Letter describes his new command - a brigade consisting of 15 regiments of infantry and two batteries of artillery; his purchase of a horse for $200; and his challenges regarding expenses and the need to borrow money. Letter also discusses the weather and favorable conditions of the camp; mentions General Burnside at Cincinnati and General Willcox at Lexington; and concludes with "love to all sends love to all and kisses to the children."
