Newspaper article, "Death of General Welsh," notes that he died at the residence of Charles O. Lockard as a result of disease contracted during the Vicksburg campaign and the pursuit of General Johnston. Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to his wife and children. From Camp Dick Robinson, Kentucky. Letter describes his new command - a brigade consisting of 15 regiments of infantry and two batteries of artillery; his purchase of a horse for $200; and his challenges regarding expenses and the need to borrow money. Letter also discusses the weather and favorable conditions of the camp; mentions General Burnside at Cincinnati and General Willcox at Lexington; and concludes with "love to all sends love to all and kisses to the children."

Description
Draft of a letter from Thomas Welsh to General Orlando B. Willcox. From Hustonville, Kentucky. Deals with disciplinary matters in the 27th Michigan Regiment, including the Chaplain who wrote a plaintive letter to the Detroit Advertiser & Tribune that was also evidently disrespectful to his superior officers. Welsh arrested the Chaplain, but recommends against dismissing him from service. In another matter involving charges brought by the late Lt. Col. Sprague of the 27th against Col. Fox of the 27th, Welsh declines to convene a Court Martial, recommending that for procedural reasons it be handled at the Department or Division level instead.

Handwritten letter addressed to "Mrs. General Welsh, Dear Madam" from John Frederick Hartranft, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Hartranft requests information regarding the life of Thomas Welsh on behalf of General Burnside who is writing a history of the 9th Corps. He expresses his admiration for Welsh and his regret that Welsh did not "live longer to enjoy the blessings of peace."

Letter from William Henry Lebkicher to his father, David McGran Lebkicher, from camp at Waterloo, regarding the marching from Hillsborough to Sneekers Gap, then to Bloomfield, then to Upperville, then to Piedmont Station where they skirmished with the Confederate Army, then to Orleans and to Waterloo (7 miles from Warrenton Junction). He mentions that he saw Capt. Grass of the 99th, General Burnside, and General McClellan.

Description
Handwritten special orders on letterhead from the Headquarters of the Army, Adjutant General's Office. Orders state that Welsh is to report for duty to Major General Burnside, Department of the Ohio, in Cincinnati following his return from his leave of absence. Orders are by command of Major General Halleck, signed by E. D. Townsend, Assistant Adjutant General.
