coal iron furnaces. Whereas bloomery forges usually made iron blooms
directly from ore and fuel, and then hammered the iron into bars or plates,
the rolling mills after 1840 depended upon pig iron, especially that cast
at anthracite furnaces.1 Charcoal iron
