C. G. Herr Collection
Title
C. G. Herr Collection
Description
The C. G. Herr Collection contains correspondence to Christian G. Herr. Most of the letters are related to his tobacco business. Although cigar brands and tobacco cuts are mentioned, most of the correspondence is about payments, orders, and samples.
Admin/Biographical History
Christian G. Herr (1839-1902) was the son of Daniel Herr and Susan Margaretta Hornberger, and a descendant of Rev. Hans Herr.
A tobacconist in Lancaster, he began as a clerk in the 1850s and soon owned a store. By 1877, he had a tobacco warehouse in the city and was manufacturing cigars with his business partners. His business was located at 45-47 N. Market Street for the majority of years, but he also had locations on N. Queen Street and N. Christian Street. C. G. Herr ordered from and shipped to tobacconists in Lancaster County, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and New York. At the turn of the twentieth century, he was a manager at Julius Vetterline & Co.
Christian married Emma Miller circa 1860. They had two sons: William M. (b. 1863) and Charles C. (b. 1868). The family resided at 224 W. Orange Street. Emma is listed in the 1880 census as having consumption. She passed away in 1881 and is buried in Woodward Hill Cemetery. Charles was involved in the tobacco business in 1900; William was a physician, married to Lizzie with one daughter.

Civil War Enlistment Certificates
Title
Civil War Enlistment Certificates
Description
This collection contains certificates of enlistment for volunteer soldiers from Lancaster City for April and May 1864. The documents show the name of the volunteer; the ward he was from; date; and signatures of volunteer, witness, and/or the draftee for which the volunteer was a substitute; and signatures of members of the Committee on Bounty Fund. These volunteers were "credited to the quota of the City of Lancaster, in the President's calls for troops."
Admin/Biographical History
"No conscription in the North during the Civil War was absolute. The drafted man could always hire a substitute if he could afford it. Starting in 1862, the U.S. government allowed this escape from military service on the theory that, so long as each name drawn from the wheel produced a man, it made no difference whether the drafted person or one hired to take his place appeared for muster. The Conscription Act of 3 March 1863 legalized this method of draft evasion. Until the act of 24 February 1864, the conscript could choose between hiring a substitute or paying the government $300 as commutation of service. Thereafter, the government only permitted substitution, except for conscientious objectors. Furthermore, exemption by furnishing a substitute extended only until the next succeeding draft, at which point the principal again became liable. Immediately, the prices of substitutes rose far above the $300 to which the commutation clause had held them. For this reason, legal draft evasion became the prerogative of only the unusually well-to-do."

Adam Reigart Jr., John S. Murphy Collection
Description
The Adam Reigart Jr., John S. Murphy Collection contains correspondence between Adam Reigart, Jr. in Lancaster and Philip Wager in Philadelphia and their families. The letters are primarily from the early nineteenth century and provide information about family illness, travel, visits, business, and family chatter. The receipts and invoices show purchases made in Lancaster and Philadelphia, especially clothing, fabric, dry goods, and meat. The remainder of the collection is made up of newspaper articles, books, and an album of poetry and drawings. The items were housed in a gig trunk which is now in the museum collection.
Admin/Biographical History
Adam Reigart, Jr. (1765-1844) was born in Lancaster. He was the eldest son of Col. Adam Reigart, owner of the Grape Tavern which served as general headquarters during the Revolutionary War. Adam Jr. founded the Reigart Wine Store in 1785 and was in business with Philip Wager in Philadelphia and Philip's son Peter throughout his career. He was the first president of the Lancaster branch of the Bank of Pennsylvania, and was involved with the Conestoga Navigation Company and the Union Fire Company.
Adam Jr. married Mary Magdalena Wager (1772-1806) in 1791. Mary was the daughter of Philip Wager, a Philadelphia wine merchant. They had eight daughters and a son. Susan married Stephen C. Slaymaker and Margaretta married Henry Y. Slaymaker.

Title
Russian War Relief Program
Description
This collection documents Lancaster County's support of Russian War Relief, Inc. during World War II. The organization was incorporated in New York City one month after Germany attacked the Soviet Union, in order to provide humanitarian support for Soviet citizens and war orphans who were living in devastated villages with near-famine conditions. Russian War Relief, Inc. worked with local War Chests, Community Chests and the National War Fund in order to raise money for the campaign. Clothing, food and Christmas gifts for children were also collected. F. Lyman Windolph, a Lancaster lawyer, worked with a few others in the community to collect contributions from 1942-1944. The collection contains a publicity portfolio for Russian War Relief, Inc. and correspondence between Mr. Windolph and members of the organization from 1942-1945.
