Custodial History
The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
This collection contains receipts and invoices from the Pinkerton & Slaymaker business. The receipts date primarily from May 1851, with one receipt from May 1853, and are for a wide variety of items. The collection also contains letters from the Philadelphia & Lancaster Turnpike Company and an undated check from the National Bank of Pottstown.
Admin/Biographical History
Henry Edwin Slaymaker and William C. Pinkerton went into the hardware business as Pinkerton & Slaymaker ca. 1850. The store was located on North Queen Street in Lancaster. The business was closed out in 1857.

Account book of Emanuel R. Hershey, Paradise Township. Book references cash amounts received, cords of wood hauled, hauling logs, tobacco, pair of shoes, potatoes, rolling the grass lot, ploughing, beef, load of tyes, planting corn, planting tobacco, making hay, weeding corn, harvesting, sewing clover seed, making fence, coal, hand thrashing, veal, lime, nails, meals, lumber, slate, cutting oats, loading manure, grape arbor, wheat, rye, sand, butter, Chestnut wood, etc.
Contains 120 leaves, ruled, and except for the front leaf and index, with vertical accounting lines, and paginated. Contains 4 blank pages).
"Ledger" is written on a piece f paper on the front cover.
"ERH=a" is written on front leaf.

Owner not identified. This could be Dr. Emanuel R. Hershey, Pharmacist (2 May 1847 - 22 October 1921), buried in the Paradise Cemetery. His father , Abraham Hershey (16 August 1819 - 18 December 1886) at his death had three tracts of land, two of them with improvements. Emanuel was the oldest son and may have kept these records.
Front and back covers are worn and have partially separated from the spine. Spine has worn through at places.
Paper has foxing.
