Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston commenting on the funeral of Miss Yeates and the lack of the old families in attendance, but led by the Cunninghams; commenting on Catharine’s will of a number of years ago and that her sister, Mrs. Cunningham, “bore the life of her sister with Christian resignation”; lamenting the last escapade of Thomas, who is back after quitting and getting his pocket picked of his earnings but that his wife Rosanna is an excellent cook; noting the “three young ones” give much pleasure to Miss Hetty; saying that Jessie, at the age of seventeen looks more like twenty, has good manners, an amenable disposition, “quite good looking,” leaning toward corpulence, will visit General Ramsay’s family in Washington, whose daughter is a good friend; noting that Blanche Nevin is unwell; complaining about the lack of communication from Mr. Schell, but James Henry might have some information; complimenting her on her housekeeping and asking her to cultivate the female members of the Johnston family; looking forward to another visit to “the Palace” but wants only “common fare”; and noting that Mrs. Steinman and sister visited a few days ago. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston giving details of the funeral of Mary Field Jenkins, noting that only Ellen and Pattie of her daughters were present and that little Kate will live with Mrs. Fordney (her physicians were Drs. Ehler and Dr. Atlee); saying that he and Mrs. Lane are on good terms though the boys, under the influence of “Uncle Dick” do not visit; the “embryo Bishop” has not visited; noting that Mr. Capen visited but did not mention the coal leases; expressing relief that Mr. Cobb did not visit since it could leave the impression that he approved of the “rebel members” of his cabinet; saying he doesn’t know which of the Misses Lehman is engaged to Mr. Hopkins; recalling the visits of Robert Tyler and Mr. Baker, liking Mr. Tyler, who will visit her in Baltimore; and saying he was not surprised at the latest political somersault of Revend Johnston. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston regretting that the weather and his age prevents him from visiting her; expressing shock at the death of Robert Magraw; expressing his joy that Judge Black and wife, Judge Fisher and wife, and Horatio King have visited on the judges’ way to Wilkes-Barre where the state supreme court will hear an important railroad case; expressing happiness the young ones” and Miss Hetty are friends; expressing joy that Thomas, after a “rampage” of eight days has returned but would be happier if he had only the services of Rosana, his wife; expressing disappointment that Mrs. Lane nor her sons have visited; expressing joy that Blanche Nevin has recovered from her illness; and saying he is very glad that he and James Henry have settled their affair, though he thinks that their friend Mr. Schell could have been more help to James in his business; and expressing elation that James has done quite well except for his “Quick Silver speculation.” With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane expressing joy at her joining the church and asking that the engraving she proposes to have framed be given to his brother Edward since James has no appropriate place to hang it; intending to have the two boxes of champagne sent from Michael’s warehouse today; stating that Miss Hetty, complaining of “violent dyspeptic symptoms,” will expose herself about the gardens and the grounds; and reporting that he has thanked Mr. Carlisle, in her name, for the photograph. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane stating that he opened her letter from Mrs. Kennedy and read the part dealing with John Lane’s estate; hoping that Mr. Riddle visits Lancaster when she is there; saying that a case has been argued in Harrisburg with no decision yet; expressing sorrow at the illness of James Henry’s wife; reporting that Bob Nevin visited last night and that he had his hand on General Whipple’s shoulder when he was mortally wounded and is taking the body to New Hampshire; expressing disappointment that no welcoming was planned for the 122nd Regiment; hoping the political parties may not “have a collision,” and having no further information about the Lanes except that Dick’s house is not yet finished.
