Letter from James Buchanan to W. Kennedy, critiquing a letter W. Kennedy wrote, saying that it had “too much good sense and sober argument to produce any sensible effect” when it came to the current state of public affairs. He also says that he will be able to assist W. Kennedy with a loan, bond, and mortgage of $3000. He writes to transmit them to Hiram B. Swarr Esq. of Lancaster, his man of transfer. 5 September 1863.

Handwritten report marked "Copy" at top addressed to Major General George McClellan recommending Colonel Thomas Welsh and Colonel Benjamin C. Christ for promotion to Brigadier General. Burnside notes they served "with high credit" and "with distinction" and "as brave and skilful officers."

Description
Draft of a letter from Thomas Welsh to General Orlando B. Willcox. From Hustonville, Kentucky. Deals with disciplinary matters in the 27th Michigan Regiment, including the Chaplain who wrote a plaintive letter to the Detroit Advertiser & Tribune that was also evidently disrespectful to his superior officers. Welsh arrested the Chaplain, but recommends against dismissing him from service. In another matter involving charges brought by the late Lt. Col. Sprague of the 27th against Col. Fox of the 27th, Welsh declines to convene a Court Martial, recommending that for procedural reasons it be handled at the Department or Division level instead.

Handwritten letter from George Hicks to Brig. General Welsh. From Columbia, Kentucky. Letter is a reply to a dispatch received by George Hicks on behalf of Thomas Welsh who was away at Jamestown, Kentucky. Hicks answers the dispatch by explaining the reasons of Welsh's transfer of Colonel Leasure to the command of the first brigade. Hicks also states that Colonel Bowman is in temporary command of General Welsh's brigade.

Handwritten letter E. S. Young, brother of Annie Welsh, from Samuel Wright, Headquarters Ninth Army Corps, Lexington, Kentucky. Letter expresses Wright's regret in not being able to personally direct final accounting of Welsh's personal belongings as requested by Annie Welsh. Provides details regarding the sale of Welsh's horse and apologizes for loss of Welsh's sword in transit to Cincinnati. Expresses concern over the health of Mrs. Welsh. Note: Addressed to C. S. Young, but most likely intended for E. S. Young, brother of Annie Young Welsh.

This group of sixteen letters of unknown ownership and whereabouts were copied on 19 July 1937 by F. A. Henry, American Consulate, Melbourne, Australia. Whether he owned the letters is not clear.
