Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane enclosing a letter from Miss Ward opened by mistake and even though he “never read beyond the first line” recounts the entire letter, admonishes Harriet for writing poor letters, and suggesting that she leave the Tyler household because she may think “that too much of a good thing, even like yourself, is good for nothing.” Wheatland, near Lancaster.
