Printed version of the court case between the executors of James Buchanan’s estate and Henry E. Johnston and Harriet L. Johnston, his wife, concerning the papers left by Buchanan, some delivered to William B. Reed for the purpose of writing a biography (as directed by the will, but Reed refused to write the biography), the alleged mis-handling by E. Y. Buchanan of a large number of family papers in the possession of the defendants, and the unwillingness of E. Y. Buchanan to destroy certain papers as directed by the will. Lancaster.

Description
Scrapbook of ephemera, newspaper articles, and original letters kept by Hiram B. Swarr that includes items related to the 1856 Presidential election, the Democratic Committee of Lancaster County, and the estate of James Buchanan.
The inscription indicates that the scrapbook was given to Edward Elliott Bausman by his mother, Mary Swarr Bausman. Mary was the daughter of Hiram B. Swarr. It is unclear if Mary or Elliott compiled the scrapbook.

Corrected manuscript attributed to Harriet Lane Johnston, describing James Buchanan’s love for Wheatland, a house “well adapted for entertainment or domestic comfort,” which will be forever associated with his “sage advice and witty anecdotes,” and the spring from which someone “often brought him water fresh from its cool depths.” 6 leaves.

Swarr noting that he has received a proposal to write the biography of James Buchanan from Mr. Shunk, who would be under the influence of Judge Black and his partially false opinions about the end of Buchanan’s administration; wondering about Mrs. Johnston’s views of Mr. Reed or the book; hoping that Mrs. Johnston has received her interest on her trust funds and is satisfied with them; noting that funds for John Weaver’s school will soon be due and suggesting that these funds and those for the Lane boys be legally invested; and noting that Mr. Reed’s property on Chestnut Hill is advertised at sheriff’s sale in the Daily Age. Buchanan’s mortgage with the interest to be brought; noting that Mr. Reed’s property is no longer offered for sale; and expressing regret that Mr. Swarr is suffering from an eye ailment as Mr. Swift’s letter indicates. Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr regretting that the weather prevented him from coming to Lancaster to attend the funeral of Mr. Wharton; hoping that the matter of the mortgage has been straightened out with Mr. McMurtrie and the purchaser; returning receipts for money received on behalf of John Weaver and Mr. Johnston’s letter; replying at length to Mr. Johnston’s objections about the housing of James Buchanan’s papers; advising no reference to Judge Black’s alleged opinion on the value of the papers; advising no reply to Mr. Johnston’s request for suggestions for the author of James Buchanan’s biography, except in noting that Mr. Shunk is unacceptable; advising warning that funds might need to be withheld from the estate if Mr. Johnston keeps threatening legal action; raising the suggestion that presidential papers now at Wheatland be removed to Mr. Swarr’s home; and asking that his name not be mentioned in his reply to Mr. Johnston. Swarr noting that he has promised his son James $2000 from the estate and offering to pay interest on the amount to ward of charges of favoritism; supposing that he has received the amount of their mortgage on Mr. Reed’s place; hoping that the Clarion County deed reached him safely; noting that he and Mr. Reed have decided not to publish any estate papers until a forthcoming letter of Judge Black about Mr. Stanton has appeared; and noting that Jessie Magaw should receive her inheritance from the estate soon and suggesting that Captain Magaw be reminded of his indebtedness to the estate.
