Slaymaker II, White Chimneys Collection, Series 2 was carefully curated by Mr. Slaymaker and contains papers dating from the mid-eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. Title: Adam Reigart Jr., John S. Murphy Collection

Description: The Adam Reigart Jr., John S. Murphy Collection contains correspondence between Adam Reigart, Jr. in Lancaster and Philip Wager in Philadelphia and their families. The letters are primarily from the early nineteenth century and provide information about family illness, travel, visits, business, and family chatter. The receipts and invoices show purchases made in Lancaster and Philadelphia, especially clothing, fabric, dry goods, and meat. The remainder of the collection is made up of newspaper articles, books, and an album of poetry and drawings. The items were housed in a gig trunk which is now in the museum collection.

Admin/Biographical History: Adam Reigart, Jr. (1765-1844) was born in Lancaster. He was the eldest son of Col. Adam Reigart, owner of the Grape Tavern which served as general headquarters during the Revolutionary War. Adam Jr. founded the Reigart Wine Store in 1785 and was in business with Philip Wager in Philadelphia and Philip's son Peter throughout his career. He was the first president of the Lancaster branch of the Bank of Pennsylvania, and was involved with the Conestoga Navigation Company and the Union Fire Company.; Adam Jr. married Mary Magdalena Wager (1772-1806) in 1791. Mary was the daughter of Philip Wager, a Philadelphia wine merchant. They had eight daughters and a son. Susan married Stephen C. Slaymaker and Margaretta married Henry Y. Slaymaker.

Description: James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 6 Papers of Hiram B. Swarr, Series 3 contains his ephemera. This series includes invitations to various events, a circular from the Democratic County Committee, membership cards from the Historical, Agricultural & Mechanics' Institute, and admission tickets to the Avon Park Agricultural and Horticultural Association of Lebanon. The dates range from 1851 to 1889.

Admin/Biographical History: Hiram Behm Swarr (1821-1896) was born in Londonderry Township in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. His father was Jacob Swarr, a prominent manufacturer of Lebanon County at the time. His mother was from the prominent Behm family. He became a lawyer instead of following in his father's footsteps. In December 1847, H.B. Swarr married Fanny T. Swarr. Together they had three children: Charles, Sallie, and Mary.; Swarr was admitted to the bar in 1847, and worked in Lancaster County for nearly fifty years. He was a member of the Democratic Party, and was also appointed the Chairman of the Democratic County Committee. He was a Democratic delegate for congress from his district in 1868 and was appointed Postmaster General from 1857 to 1861. Additionally, he belonged to the Lancaster School Board, the Board of Censors, the Law Library Association, and was one of the founders of the Lancaster Bar Association.; Swarr was also a close friend of President James Buchanan, handled many of Buchanan's financial affairs and investments, and was appointed co-executor of James Buchanan's estate in 1868.

Description: The George Steinman Papers, Series 1 contains an album, compiled by George Steinman, with many photographs of buildings, tombstones, monuments and scenes of Lancaster city and county. Ephemera and newspaper articles are among the photographs. Represented in the album are Postlethwaite's Tavern, hotels and taverns, fire houses, the Conestoga massacre, churches, cemeteries, Ephrata Cloister, prominent citizens and their homes, Stehli Silk Mill, and schools. The four boxes contain orginal correspondence, documents, photographs and ephemera or and pertaining to the same subject matter as the album.; The George Steinman Papers, Series 2 is a collection of original correspondence, documents, photographs, and ephemera primarily compiled by George Steinman. The contents of Series 2 represent Lancaster city and county events, prominent citizens, buildings, monuments, churches, cemeteries, schools, and businesses. Most of what Steinman collected relates to 18th and 19th century Pennsylvania, highlighting Lancaster and Philadelphia. One of the key events highlighted is the Revolutionary war; with documents and images related to Philadelphia, George Washington, the Atlee family, and General Edward Hand. There are images relating to the Christiana Riot and to various buildings in early Lancaster; including but not limited to the Old Jail, the British Prison, and Postlethwaite's Tavern. Also included in the collection is currency printed by Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia in 1764, and Confederate States currency and bonds.

Description: The Diffenderffer Family Papers collection contains items that have been passed down through generations of the Diffenderffer family. Deeds for tracts of land in New Holland date back to the creation of New Design, the village that preceded New Holland. Correspondence and some manuscripts pertain to J. P. McCaskey's life and accomplishments. F. R. Diffenderffer's manuscripts on Easter Day and Conrad Weiser are preserved with this collection, as well as poems, a program for the C. Description: The documents in MG0545, Series 6 pertain to a city fund set up by the Hon. James Buchanan in 1853 [or 1849] with the purchase and donation of a $4,000 bond, the interest of which was used to buy heating fuel and other items for needy women (mostly widows) throughout the city. As other philanthropists contributed money, the Fund had additional names added to it, such as the Buchanan-McEvoy Fund and the Buchanan-McEvoy-Reynolds Fund. The documents in this series include invoices and receipts for some of the financial transactions completed by the relief fund such as the purchasing of coal, advertizing the fund and soliciting for coal donations in local newspapers, as well as the printing of Relief Fund "tickets."

Admin/Biographical History: The Buchanan Donation Fund was a city fund set up by the Hon. James Buchanan in 1853 [or 1849] with the purchase and donation of a $4,000 bond, the interest of which was used to buy heating fuel and other items for needy women (mostly widows) throughout the city. Description: This collection of Strasburg Pharmacy Records contains business records including receipt, prescription, price, and account books; a poison register; formulas for medication and other treatments; invoices and receipts; and advertising blotters.

Admin/Biographical History: The pharmacy was first operated by Dr. Samuel Keneagy and was known as Keneagy & Bros. The pharmacy was called Weaver's Drug Store under the ownership of W. J. Weaver and J. G. Weaver. In 1949, Kenneth W. Hood purchased the business, which was renamed Hood's Pharmacy until his retirement in 1962. The business was most recently known as Strasburg Pharmacy.

Collection: Andrew B. Rote Collection

Title: Andrew B. Rote Collection

Description: The Andrew B. Rote Collection contains the business records of C. V. Rote & Co., which later became A. B. Rote & Co., and some family records. The Lancaster company specialized in awnings and ironwork. Deeds, mortgages, and other property records are for property owned by the Rotes and used for their business. The record books of the company, 1881-1942, show accounting, clients, cash flow, bids, and inventory. A catalog of architectural bronze and iron works illustrates their products. There are also stock certificates for a number of local and regional businesses such as Farmers Trust Company, Union Trust Company, and Meadia Heights Golf Club.

Admin/Biographical History: C. V. Rote & Company was founded by Charles V. Rote, Jacob F. Bender, and John W. Holman on 3 March 1881, specifically for the manufacture of awnings. Bender and Holman provided the financing, space for the shop, the time they could commit, and the use of their horse and buggy. Rote committed his labor and time in manufacturing the awnings. Their initial success continued when they added architectural bronze and iron work. Andrew B. Rote took over the business in 1894, which was then located at 111-117 E. Chestnut Street, Lancaster.

Description: James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 8 the Papers of Others (Not Part of the Family), Series 1 contains correspondence from various individuals who, although not familiarly related to James Buchanan, may be related through business, extended family relationships, and friends and guests of Wheatland.; Named recipients and authors include Joseph C. Passmore (1843), Virginia Pleasonton (1849), Ann Elizabeth Foster Buchanan (1850), George S. Bryan (1855); H. S. Gara (1855), George Steinman (1857), Morrison Foster (1859), D.G. Eshleman (1860), Hiram B. Swarr (1860), H. M. North (1860), William E. Cooper (1861, 1862, 1864, 1866, 1888), Harry N. Howell (1862), P. S. Dechert (1862, 1864), George W. Birdseye (1863), M. J. Nevin (1877), S. M. L. Barlow (1881), R. J. Brown (1885), William Anderson (1886), Elizabeth C. Hobson (1905), C. H. Robb (1905), Bernard Carter (1905), May S. Kennedy (1905), Mary Speer (1905), and Louisa Anderson Henry.; Subject matter varies greatly from politics to family issues. There is mention of the political figures and climate in Lancaster and Chambersburg, Pennsylvania just prior to and after the start of the Civil War. There are also letters discussing the publication of Stephen Foster's songs, George Ticknor Curtis' biography of James Buchanan, the death of Louisa Anderson Henry, and the status of Harriet Lane Johnston's paintings after her death. The majority of the letters were either from or to Pennsylvania, particularly Lancaster County, with a few from New York and Washington, DC. The letters are arranged in chronological order and range from 1843 through 1905.

Admin/Biographical History: Many of the individuals named throughout this part of the collection are unknown, only their names as they appear on the document and the dates on those documents represent their history. There are a few exceptions.; Simon Cameron was a Pennsylvania senator in 1845 and Lincoln's Secretary of War during the Civil War. Most of his political career was tarnished with corruption scandals and rumors. He was also a staunch opponent of James Buchanan.; George Ticknor Curtis was an attorney and author who wrote a biography of James Buchanan in 1883 entitled "Life of James Buchanan: 15th President of the United States."; Reverend John Grimke Drayton was a highly respected Episcopalian minister from South Carolina, known for advocating on behalf of slaves and creating beautiful gardens on his estate as part of his legacy.; Jonathan Foltz was a Naval doctor and close acquaintance with James Buchanan. Part 7 of this collection contains letters to and from Dr. Foltz.; Virginia Pleasonton was an acquaintance of Harriet Lane Johnston and James Buchanan Henry and there are few letters from her to Mr. Henry in Part 3 of this collection.; Stephen C. Foster was an American songwriter during the 1850's and 1860's, who composed "Camptown Races" and "Oh, Susannah!". His brother was Morrison Foster and his sister, Ann Elizabeth Foster, married Reverend Edward Young Buchanan, James Buchanan's brother, in 1833.; Henry A.
