Description
Sheraton-inspired mahogany veneer night table with satinwood inlay accents that outline the apron, drawer and keyhole, as well as the legs. The table top has eight sides and surmounts four saber legs that also support a lower inward-curved shelf.

The inscription indicates that the scrapbook was given to Edward Elliott Bausman by his mother, Mary Swarr Bausman. Mary was the daughter of Hiram B. Swarr. It is unclear if Mary or Elliott compiled the scrapbook.

Swarr acknowledging receipt of his commission on Harriet Lane Johnston’s trust interest; noting that he has received about 300 sheets of proofs of Mr. Curtis’s interesting James Buchanan biography; and noting that the shares of United Company’s stock are up for sale, and that he intends to invest the proceeds in the Philadelphia Trust & Deposit Company where he has already invested $600 at 2%. 1342 Pine Street, Philadelphia.

Swarr [from context] finalizing the trust accounts; noting that he has paid certain charges out of his personal account in order to rectify an earlier error; stating that he has overpaid Mr. Curtis by $1221.50 in total; noting that there are additional expenses in connection with the Boston Herald libel, which he, because of no payment by Mr. and Mrs. Johnston since their return, will pay to Mr. Curtis and his nephew out of his personal account; asking that his Trust account be put in proper shape for filing and noting that he has receipts for nearly all disbursements. 1342 Pine Street, Philadelphia, [1883, date from context].

Letter from Nahum Capen to Harriet Lane Johnston referring to the forty letters that he had received from President Buchanan. The letters had been relayed from Mr. Reed to Mr. Curtis to Rev. Dr. Buchanan, who has unpacked 18 of them and not yet found the paper giving the conversation between President Buchanan and Col. Benton. Mr. Capen would like to give her his index to the letters and visit her in Baltimore if she wishes. Mt. Ida.
