The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.

Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson reporting that the President has reviewed the gentlemanly- and gallant-looking 600-700 strong 7th New York Regiment, arriving by steamer to accompany the remains of former President James Monroe to Richmond and that they will leave on an excursion on Tuesday morning early. Swarr promising a trip to Lancaster soon; mentioning that Mrs. Dunham has sent a receipt for the amount of her mortgage and proposing that Mrs. Dunham’s father, rather than G. W. Hecker whom she has recommended, is sufficient to enter satisfaction on her mortgage; discussing an enquiry from his son James about whether James Buchanan owned land in Forest County; and promising to send the check to Jessie Magaw. Swarr saying that he has dealt with the affairs of Mrs. Dunham and asked her to name a person to handle a power of attorney; that Gaw Bacon & Co are holding all securities until the rate improves; that he prefers to visit Lancaster when Mr. Johnston is not there; that Jessie Magaw has written asking for $100 to help her parents; and that he is glad to learn that Mr. Howell is getting a solid block of marble for the monument and hopes to see Mr. Howell in Lancaster. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson apologizing for not writing on schedule but while they are in the country the regular schedule will not work since the President leaves the While House on Friday for the weekend; he is arranging a Party for a sail on the Harriet Lane that he will have no time to write; he hopes the trip will include Annapolis so that he might bring is best friend Mr. Scharff, who has kept him from becoming too wild, to meet her and implores her to like him; General Ward is joining the group in hopes that Miss Saunders will also be there, but she will not be; mentions her cousin Margie, the Ingrahams, and her aunt; chatted with Miss Emily.
