Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr enumerating expenses on behalf of the estate amounting to about $47 and noting that his travel since January 1st has been on a railroad pass without expense to the estate; hoping that Swarr arrived safely home on Saturday and that Alice was decidedly in luck; asking for six additional impressions of the photograph of Wheatland for his family; and announcing plans to come to Lancaster on Thursday. Accompanying the letter is an undated newspaper article criticizing the later reduction in size of James Buchanan’s cemetery lot.

Opinion of Judge Black regarding provisions of James Buchanan’s will: canes are not included in the category of wearing apparel; the sum of $12,000, the valuation of Wheatland in the will, is to be deducted from Harriet Lane Johnston’s one fourth of the general estate, any pecuniary value of James Buchanan’s papers must be divided among the legatees, but the executors may use their judgment in distributing papers of only sentimental value ; and a copy of only the canes and papers provisions in another hand.
