Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston rejoicing that “his namesake” has been baptized; noting that Mrs. Shunk did accompany her husband to Washington as Mary Black supposed; expressing happiness that “little Frank Scroder has recovered; conjecturing on the whereabouts of Miss Snyder, probably with her sister Mrs. Elsegood; elated that Henrietta has gone to Baltimore and might find a beau; repeating the gossip from Blanche Nevin that Harriet Lane had married Octavius Norris of Baltimore; thanking her for the cigars and cheese even though he did not like them, and the stockings, which he did, praying that she will “send me no more cheese”; and hoping his new-found relationship with Mrs. Lane will continue. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing sorrow that she and her husband have contracted bad colds; chastising her for wishing she had a double house, advising her to “Be content with your lot” and she has “abundant reason to be so”; advising against inserting Mr. Schell’s “likeness” into the locket; the domestic Ellen’s illness has affected her mind and made Thomas “miserable and disconsolate”; George is leaving and “another colored man will take his place”; Buchanan will not go to New York because he feels unwell and cannot leave until “the girls” do, commenting that they are now sleighing with Octavius and Miss Griffith; willing to sell a house to Mrs. James Norris for $15,000 but Mrs. Lane could have it for $13,000; regretting he has not heard from the Nevins lately; gleefully announcing that Miss Annie will launch into the “Apostolic succession when Dr. Spark’s book arrives”; complaining that Mr. Capen writes far too many letters and that he answers only a few of them; advising Mr. Johnston to go ahead with his own book because Buchanan is too old to be any use; and giving his love to Emily and Bessy.
