Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston noting that Mrs. Ellis’ visit was agreeable and hoping that Mr. Johnston will meet her in Baltimore when she arrives, she and Becky got along agreeably; noting that the stockings don’t quite fit; comments on seeing her sister in the Reynolds carriage; passing along the gossip from Brother Edward that Ellie Bowman confided that she would marry Pat McEvoy and Buchanan agrees; and thinking that Mr. Shunk is performing his work well. Printed version of the court case between the executors of James Buchanan’s estate and Henry E. Johnston and Harriet L. Johnston, his wife, concerning the papers left by Buchanan, some delivered to William B. Reed for the purpose of writing a biography (as directed by the will, but Reed refused to write the biography), the alleged mis-handling by E. Y. Buchanan of a large number of family papers in the possession of the defendants, and the unwillingness of E. Y. Buchanan to destroy certain papers as directed by the will. Lancaster.

Swarr thanking him for sending Mr. Reed’s article from the Baltimore Gazette and his note, which he returns; doubting that Mr. Reed’s article was much of a vindication; expressing no surprise at Judge Black’s opinions; hoping to see Judge Cadwalader and make arrangements about the files of the Intelligencer & Journal and permission to see the papers still at Wheatland; planning to stay at the Atlantic Hotel in Cape May; and believing that Mr. and Mrs. Johnston must be pleased that Judge Cadwalader and not Judge Black has been appointed as James Buchanan’s biographer. Swarr thanking him for his resumé of his latest correspondence with the Johnstons; saying that Mrs. Johnston has no power to prevent the removal of the papers from Wheatland and leaving the legal steps necessary to remove the papers to Swarr; denying that he and his daughter Annie left papers at Wheatland in confusion after sorting out important ones for Mr. Reed, although agreeing that they are now in confusion; noting the absurdity of Mrs. Johnston suggesting that increasing the biographical fund to $20,000 would in any way assure the rapid acquisition of a suitable biographer; and sympathizing with Mr. Swarr on having to correspond with such unreasonable persons as the Johnstons.
