Letter in which James Buchanan replies to Gabriel Hiester’s request for a date to attend to business and/or legal matters in Lancaster, PA. Buchanan describes how he cannot leave Washington until a final disposition shall be made on the tariff, which is a subject of great interest in PA and to the Union. He continues to describe that the Senate may amend the bill and that it will return to the House for concurrence and that he must be present for any votes. 26 April 1828.

Excerpts of correspondence from James Buchanan, Sr. and Elizabeth Speer Buchanan to their son James Buchanan from 1809 through 1826 regarding Buchanan’s early political career. Letters from 1809 through 1813 are written out twice. There are also two envelopes where the excerpcts were kept. 1809-1826.

Transcription of the court papers filed in the action by the stockholders of the Marietta & Susquehanna Trading Company against a the appointed Trustees of the Company, Jacob Grosh, Jacob Gish (Gisch), Jacob Mishey (Misher), James Patterson, Jr. and William Child, entrusted to resolve the company, however none of the debts were ever collected. Transcription includes a background, complaint, answer and exhibits. Transcribed by the Clerk of the Circuit Court, David Caldwell.

Black-glazed pottery with wide bottom, narrow neck with molded band, wide flaring mouth. Around inside of lip-heart pattern. Back of body has ornate, double petalled (six each) flower mold. Front has oval medallion, surrounded by scrollwork.
Wine bottle. Brown glass, shallow pontil, seamed shoulder and neck. Cork with red wax to seal mouth. Wine inside almost to shoulder level. Found by volunteers sometime during the early years of the James Buchanan Foundation. Bottle was found in the east end of the basement level in the Wheatland mansion.
Oil floorcloth. Cream background with gray squares surrounding deep teal squares. Diagonal black lines connect smaller squares on four sides. Hard surface, thing, woven hemp backing. Divided into sections, measurements are as follows: A. 412.25' B. 510'
Poor condition. Some removed for radiators; wearing down to cloth. Original oilcloth put in by Mr. Jenkins when house was built in 1828. Acquired with purchase of house.
