Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson relating his lengthy trip from Annapolis to Baltimore (where he would have visited her dear Margie if he had had a letter of introduction, to Philadelphia, to Newark (where Mr. Scharff joined him and had a pleasant chat and a bite to eat in New York) to New York (where he met Barton Key and Mr. Banks), by boat up the river to Albany and disembarking at Saratoga Moreau to finish the trip by carriage; recalls the many people that have come and gone since he started visiting Lake George and wishes she could be there with him; instead of going to Bolton via public transportation, Mr. Davids will take him on his yacht. Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson expressing gratitude for a five-day interlude in his less than happy position as personal secretary to the President and is “disconsolate” after Mr. Scharff’s leaving on the Harriet Lane; provides intimate details of a conversations with Mr. Scharff about their opening a law office together in New York after his upcoming marriage and that all four will be happy together living in adjoining houses in a pleasant little town near Manhattan; renders an account of his entire life including the death of his parents, his college experiences, his passing the bar in Philadelphia and setting up a thriving office there before being called by the President to be his personal secretary, a post he hopes to vacate as soon as possible to return to law practice; and his relative freedom while James Buchanan and Harriet Lane go to Bedford for a retreat, leaving him free to visit Mary on the weekends. Envelope with most of the postmark removed with the stamps and addressed to Miss Mary H. Nicholson, Care Col. Nicholson, Annapolis, Maryland; also a blank invitation card of the President’s. Washington, D.C.

Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson apologizing for not having written on the 1st but he was busy preparing and attending the Diplomatic and Public reception with all the military men in uniform; Napoleon looked especially sharp; at midnight the “great unwashed” were allowed in; after 2 a.m. Mrs. Craig and he visited about 12 people and he drank too much; Captain Ingraham was at Sartige’s party even though he can’t stand mourning, but the girls looked good in black; Miss Emily will visit the girl’s soon and Mary Hagner Nicholson’s mother will visit Washington soon; Dr. Dan had not been in Annapolis lately, leading James Buchanan Henry to surmise that all was well in the Nicholson family; has agreed to be Mr. Scharff’s groomsman and implores him to save his money; thinks her cousin Phil Vorhees is very accommodating and won’t “trespass “ on his goodness often; wishes to know what she did on New Year’s Day and thanks her for “returning” Mr. Scharff to him. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson looking for her next letter; hopes she enjoyed her last party; Picolomini is singing, but he is not going to hear her; visited her sister Emily but she was out; the Ingrahams told him that Mary and Miss Margie were coming to town for a few days; list all the parties he hates to attend including Miss Saunders’ ball; General Cass’s dinner; the Douglas’s ball; Mrs. Riggs’ and Mrs. Merricks’ ball; and a reception at the President’s; still has a cold; infers she is the reason for his appreciating life more; Dr. Dan is flitting about on the social circuit; hopes Dr. Dan will find a “sweet little aunt” at Belvidere; the Scharffs are enjoying married life; Bob Magraw returned to Baltimore; the Cobbs and others on the Rev. Cutter’s expeditions dropped in on the Scharffs; and James Buchanan Henry will take to Scharffs to a reception and a large State dinner.
