Description: Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson apologizing for not having written on the 1st but he was busy preparing and attending the Diplomatic and Public reception with all the military men in uniform; Napoleon looked especially sharp; at midnight the “great unwashed” were allowed in; after 2 a.m. Mrs. Craig and he visited about 12 people and he drank too much; Captain Ingraham was at Sartige’s party even though he can’t stand mourning, but the girls looked good in black; Miss Emily will visit the girl’s soon and Mary Hagner Nicholson’s mother will visit Washington soon; Dr. Dan had not been in Annapolis lately, leading James Buchanan Henry to surmise that all was well in the Nicholson family; has agreed to be Mr. Scharff’s groomsman and implores him to save his money; thinks her cousin Phil Vorhees is very accommodating and won’t “trespass “ on his goodness often; wishes to know what she did on New Year’s Day and thanks her for “returning” Mr. Scharff to him. Summary: This narrative history is organized around the heritage, experiences, and legacy of a Mennonite couple-Mart and Mattie (Martin) Zimmerman-whose lives spanned the tumultuous era of Lancaster County history played out between the Civil War and the Great Depression. The Zimmermans' married life and the lives of their six children were shaped by dramatic events. Looming particularly large over Mart and Mattie's marriage was "the pulpit affair," an episode launched by a clandestine act in a new Mennonite meetinghouse in the fall of 1889 for which Mart was mistakenly blamed. The "pulpit affair" mushroomed into a principal factor in the far-reaching division between conservative and progressive members of the Lancaster Mennonite Conference in 1893. For Mart and Mattie Zimmerman's family, the fallout included Mart's expulsion from the Mennonite fellowship, nearly two decades of undeserved suspicion, an unsettled home life, and the Zimmerman children's adult affiliations with five different religious denominations.
