Summary
Book provides reader with a short biography of Urban. A brief description of the red brick architectural appearance of Lancaster up to 1880s. Urban's designs changed the colonial appearance of Lancaster because he had access to modern technology: structural steel, cast iron, plate glass which allowed him to design taller buildings with larger windows. Book identifies as Urban's designs: one market; one municipal building; two churches; three schools; four mansions (including Urban's home on Buchanan Ave). Each structure is identified with a description, location and year built; picture of structure; brief biography of person for whom building was named. One page provides the reader with architectural terms.Good reference book.

This essay goes into cost of building, how it was financed, date of laying the foundation, the names of tenants for each of the 17 floors, and the number of square feet per floor divided by the number of tenants per floor, one picture of a the skeleton of the structure and one of a completed (1925) building. A notation indicates that the 18th floor was added in 1963 and the 19th floor in 1975.Adams provides the reader with information of the impact of the building on business in Lancaster at the time. Summary
"This year's Journal...is about a local landmark which holds the venerable distinction of having influenced the educational lives of three and in some instances four generations of local families..."
"Of all the landmarks in the Ephrata area, none have the distinction of having touched more liaves or aggected more generations than the building today known as Highland Elementary School. Except during tow major periods of renovation, the school has remained in continuous use as a center of education for Ephrata students ever since it was first built as the Ephrata High School in 1927."
"...it would be a landmark in its own right due to the confluence of two major architectural powerhouses: the renowned Lancaster architect C. Emlen Urban and prominent local craftsman Alexander L. Gerhart."
